Theorist: FRed Jones
"For teaching to be enjoyable, you must be able to simply relax and teach. Classroom management must be built from the ground up so that most problems do not occur." – Dr. Fred Jones
Fred Jones, a PH.d in clinical psychology, has researched and developed various methods of non-adversarial ways to keep a classroom running smoothly. In his studies, Jones sets a common goal of all approaches to discipline:
1. Responsibility 2. Civil
- Paying Attention - Respectful, Polite
- Making a strong effort - Cordial, Well mannered
Jones raises problems that ineffective classrooms have in regard to classroom management. The main problem in the classroom is massive time wasting (goofing off, talking, unnecessary movement). Only one disruption should occur every two minutes in a well-mannered classroom according to Jones. He also mentions other types of problem behaviors like student passivity, aimlessness, helpless hand raising. and ineffective nagging. However, to every problem there is a solution. Jones solutions to these problems are conserve time (establishing structure), classroom arrangement (easy movement for teacher and students), teach meaning/purpose of discipline, assign responsibilities (line leader, library book deliverer, paper passer), bell work (daily oral language, math problems), active engagement, visual instruction plans, body language (show students you mean business) and incentives. These solutions are effective in every grade because they are straight forward and easy to understand. If you are searching for direct solutions to certain behavior that disrupt your classroom, Fred Jones is theorist to research. Below are links and a video that give great tips and example of how his theories look in a classroom when executed correctly.
