"Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world" - Nelson Mandela
¡Hola a todos! Welcome to my website! I am Melissa Meyer and I am from Chicago, IL. I am senior at Hope College majoring in Spanish Education K-12 with a dance minor. During the spring semester of my Junior year, I was given the opportunity to study abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina. My time abroad opened my eyes to new ideas and cultures that will be integrated into my classroom. For example: The little pictures on each of my pages are of Mafalda who is an Argentinean comic figure that promotes critical thinking and global awareness. I have also taught ESL through the program LAUP at Hope College for two years. My students were mainly hispanic and I provided a bilingual educational setting utilizing authentic English texts and interactive/partner activities. These rich experiences will be brought into my classroom along with different theories about classroom management.
This website will give you an idea on my ideas of classroom management and how it will be applied. The number one fear of many new teachers is the idea of how to manage their classroom behaviors. This used to be my fear as well until I took the behavior management class offered by Hope College. By navigating this website, you will be able find information about behavior management theories with links to various sources that will provide a deeper understanding to the theories/theorists mentioned in my website. Each tab will guide you to the information pages of PBS, LCSI, Manifestation Determination, etc.
As a linguist, I favor Dan Matthew's idea of how "behavior is a form of communication" that needs to be taught to the students instead of assumed. Through out my website, you will find a few phrases or words in Spanish demonstrating that behavior management applies to every classroom and environment, even the language classes. My website will communicate skills and ideas that can contribute to meaningful class time and an encouraging classroom community.
