LSCI
Life Space Crisis Intervention is a non-violent strategy that intervenes with students in a crisis behavior therapeutically, interactively, and verbally. This happens when the incident/crisis escalates and the conflict is between the students and others. The role of the adult is to mediate the interaction between the student, the others involved, and the feelings the student is unable to control without the help of others. LCSI does more than deescalate the problem, it draws into the root of the pattern/behavior that keeps getting the student into trouble. Besides gaining insight in the pattern, it is designed to decrease the likelihood of the pattern/behavior to happen again. Instead of viewing stressful crisis situations as a failure of class room management, LSCI views them as learning, growth, insight, and change opportunities. By using LSCI, teachers are able to build a stronger trust and rapport with the students by giving them a chance to express what is going on in a positive and healthy way.
Below is a chart that identifies the four main ideas of LSCI called the conflict cycle. The four main topics are conflict analysis, conflict prevention, conflict resolution, and conflict management/mitigation. By following this cycle, we as teachers can avoid criminalizing our students and give them a chance to be taught new skills. If an intervention strategy is not working, it would be better and easier to discard the intervention rather than the student.
