Seclusion and Restraint
Seclusion and Restraint are safety procedures the isolates the students or gently restrains them from other students. Restraint should be only used in an emergency. There are three types of restraint (we will be focusing on physical):
*Physical: Should only be used as a last resort. This can only be used when a student is causing harm to others, themselves, or school property. Physical restraint should only last about 10 minutes. Any time that the teacher puts their hands on a student, the administrators and parents should be contacted and the teacher should debrief with the student and another co-worker.

Mechanical
Seclusion is when the students are confined in a secured room by themselves so they are able to cool off and contain their emotions. Seclusion should not go over 15 minutes for elementary students and 20 minutes for high school students. This should also be a last resort and should be used only if the students are causing harm to themselves or others. They should not be put in seclusion multiple times in a 10 day span. This would fall into the 10 day rule and be brought into a Manifestation Determination meeting.
Seclusion is preferred than restraint because there are incidences when students act violent to receive the touch that they crave or lack. Seclusion allows them to take time by themselves to gain control over themselves again. With both techniques , they need to be reported right after the incident.
