Top 10 Classroom Behaviors
1. Bullying (no le molestes)
- Social unit: At the beginning of the year, students will be engaged in a discussion about the expectations of the class. The behavior that is expected will be modeled through out the year and positively reinforced.
- Picture books: Student will be asked to make their own "idea picture book" of what respectful behavior looks like in the classroom. When there are bullying disturbances, the students will be asked to refer back to their picture books to evaluate if they are meeting their own expectations.
- Set expectation for treatment of others
- Give opportunities to share in small groups (las oportunidades para compartir con los grupos pequeños): Because this class is a language classroom, students are encouraged to converse, discuss and give ideas to their small groups.
- Author chairs (La silla del autór): Each student will have an opportunity to share their written work. This activity will be beneficial for those who want/need positive attention. This activity will be modeled by the teacher first so the expectations and rules can be implemented.
- Shine time:
- Procedure (this will addressed the first week of class and be reviewed through out the year)
- Hall pass: The class will have a specific object in the class that they can take when they need to excuse themselves to the bathroom with out disrupting.
- When is a good time to go: Appropriate times will be during work times that are given during class time. If it is an emergency, the student may excuse themselves to use the facilities and return to their seat quietly and respectfully.
- Schedule in time: This really depends on what type of classroom I am in. If I have elementary schoolers, bathroom times will be scheduled in and they will be able to use the pass. In my middle school and high school classes, I will expect them to either use the bathroom before coming to class or use the hall pass in the way that was mentioned above.
*In language classes, interactive activities are key to discovering and practicing the target language. Movement will be allowed in my classroom but must be appropriate to what we are doing in class.
- Fidgets: Students who need an extra energy release will be provided the option of having a fidget to use while the mini lessons are going on. If a student is not using their fidget appropriately it will be taken away until the student can demonstrate the proper treatment and use of a fidget.
- Students will be responsible to check themselves in with popsicle sticks. Students with certain illnesses or legitimate excuses will be took into account and worked with so they are able to participate and stay on task.
6. Tattling (no sean caprichosos)
- Give students ideas for how to work things out: Instead of punishing a student, I will provide the students the language and tools to solve the problem on their own. I want the students to learn how to pick their battles and valuing which situation would be worth having the teacher involved.
- Modeling: This topic will be included in their picture book of behavior as well as modeled in the social unit. Through out the year, the teacher will model what appropriate behavior and reactions to problems looks like.
- If talking out of turn becomes a problem, the teacher will brainstorm options to fix this lagging skill. One idea is that the class will create a "talking stick" those who have the stick will be the only ones allowed to give their opinion during the class discussions. This will also be addressed in the social unit/behavior picture book by the students and the teacher will ask the students if they are meeting their own requirements.
8. Personal Space (no me toques)
- Elementary students: The classroom will have a rug with boxes that have colors. The teacher will model in the beginning of the year that students should only sit in one square and keep their hands to themselves. Students will be reminded each day through out the year to keep their hands to themselves.
-Middle/high school students: Students will be responsible for solving this problem on their own. The teacher will provide them with the tools and language to solve these problems. If the situation gets out of control of the student, the teacher will intervene and get the students back on track.
9. Motivation (si se puede!)
- Language classes provide students the opportunity to explore the unknown, The teacher will engage students in various types of activities like music, videos, news papers, art, etc. Appealing to the student's interests is a huge part of motivation. The teacher should make the effort to find what interests the students and what sets them off. With this information, the teacher can build a curriculum with the students being the key part of the learning.
10. Sharing Materials (Comparten materiales)
- Classroom materials (markers, crayons): The classroom will provide materials and because they belong to the classroom, it is required that everyone shares them. It is a privilege to have them and if the students can not share them then the privilege will be lost.
- "Take one, leave one" pencil jar: If a student needs to borrow a pencil, they can leave a piece of collateral on the teacher's desk. This can be a student's id or a shoe so the student can remember to return them at the end of the class.
